Blecua, Viñas del Vero's flagship winery
10 years have been enough for Viñas del Vero, the leading winery in the Somontano D.O. whose first wines were released in 1990, to bring to fruition one of the projects closest to its heart: a winery for the crafting of its most top notch wine, Blecua, whose doors opened for the first time in July 2000.
The Blecua winery is very close to Viñas del Vero, just before you arrive at the latter on the road from Barbastro to Alquézar. The estate dates from the end of the 11th century, when it was used as a retreat by the French Benedictine monks from Sainte Foy de Conques. Set in 14 hectares of vineyard, and located in the heart of Somontano, Blecua is a wondrous old House that has been completely restored by Viñas del Vero to create a new winery for the sole purpose of making an exceptional wine: Blecua.
Blecua is the product of what we refer to as a triple selection process: of vineyards, grapes, and barrels. Nowadays Viñas del Vero has one of the largest expanses of vineyards in Spain that are actually owned by the company. Similarly, we select the seven best vineyards of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha and Tempranillo every year. Then, after carefully picking the grapes by hand we make a second selection of grapes, in the winery, then begin a traditional and careful wine making process that culminates with the selection of the best barrels of each variety. Only the best barrels, selected after several thorough tastings by our winemakers go into the definitive Blecua blend. We thus obtain a unique, limited production wine that represents the best of Viñas del Vero year after year.
